Terms of service

These terms cover selling your cards to us. They explain what we each agree to do, what happens when something goes wrong, and how you get paid. We have tried to write them in plain language rather than the usual thicket.

By submitting a lot you agree to them. If there is anything here you are not happy with, tell us before you ship. We would rather talk about it than have you find out afterwards.

Who you are dealing with

These terms are between you and James Gore, who trades as Viridian Cards. Viridian Cards is a trading name rather than a separate company, so the person on our side of this agreement is James Gore. Where these terms say "we" or "us", that is who is meant.

You can reach us at support@viridian.cards.

Who can use this

You need to be able to enter into a binding agreement. If you are under 18, that means a parent or guardian has to be the one agreeing to these terms and receiving the payout. We will deal with them, not with you, once money is involved.

You also need to actually own what you send us. See What you promise us below.

How selling to us works

The whole process, in order:

  • You submit a ticket describing your lot, with photos or video of it.
  • We review it and either accept or decline. We are not obliged to accept any lot.
  • You pack your box and upload a photo of the packed contents before you seal it. This is how we confirm nothing was packed in a way that will damage it, and how we identify whose cards are in the box when it arrives.
  • We buy and send you a prepaid label. Postage to us is on us, whatever your lot turns out to be worth.
  • You ship, and add your tracking number.
  • We scan and price every card, front and back, and post the full breakdown to your lot page.
  • You have 72 hours to look through it and ask for any cards back.
  • You accept, and we pay you.

What you promise us

When you send us a lot, you are telling us that:

  • You own the cards, or are authorised by the owner to sell them.
  • They are not stolen, and are not subject to anyone else’s claim.
  • You have described the lot honestly, to the best of your knowledge.
  • You are not knowingly including counterfeit cards.

If a lot turns out to be stolen we will cooperate with the rightful owner and with law enforcement, and we will not pay for it.

Getting your box to us

Until your box is delivered to us, it is at your risk. If the carrier loses or damages it in transit, that loss is yours, not ours. We cannot verify what was in a box that never arrived, and we would not be able to price a claim honestly if we tried.

That said, we bought the label and we hold the tracking, so we will file the carrier claim for you and pass on whatever is recovered. Labels carry the carrier’s standard included cover; if your lot is worth appreciably more than that, tell us before we buy the label and we will add cover.

Once your box is delivered to us, the risk is ours.

Pack it properly. If a lot arrives damaged because it was packed badly (loose cards shifting in an oversized box, no padding, a carton that was never going to survive), we will price what actually arrives, and the packing photo is how we tell the difference between that and carrier damage.

When we decline a lot

We can decline a submission before it ships, and we can decline one after it arrives. A lot can turn out to be nothing like its description, or to be in a condition we cannot work with.

If we decline before you ship, nothing happens: no label is bought and you keep your cards.

If we decline after your box has arrived, we send it back to you at our cost. We accepted the ticket and issued the label, so the return is on us.

How we price your cards

Every card is priced individually against its market value, rather than at a flat rate by rarity. The percentage we pay rises with the value of the card:

  • Cards worth $1.00 or less: 10% of market value
  • Cards between $1.00 and $10.00: 10%, plus one percentage point for every full $0.15 of market value above $1.00
  • Cards worth $10.00 or more: 70%

So a $2.50 card is paid at 20%, a $5.00 card at 36%, and a $7.50 card at 53%. The scale is continuous: there are no bands, and a card worth slightly more than another is never paid at a lower rate.

Every card we keep earns a minimum regardless of that scale: one cent for Pokémon, half a cent for everything else. Basic energy, code cards and lands are priced at their own fixed rates.

Market values come from CardUploader and are used as reported. We do not mark them down. Where a card has too little sales history to price, or where the aggregated price is obviously wrong, we enter what we believe the market value to be and flag that card as manually priced on your lot, so you can always see which numbers came from where.

Your 72-hour window

When your breakdown is posted you have 72 hours to review it and request any cards back, for any reason, at any value. It is your collection and you should keep what you want to keep.

Requested cards ship back together in a single package, so the return postage is charged once per lot no matter how many cards you ask for. The fee is the actual cost of that return label, and your lot page shows you what requesting a card will cost before you confirm it. For an unusually large return we price the shipping by hand rather than guess.

A card you ask back is removed from your payout, since you are keeping it rather than selling it to us. Your payout will never go below zero as a result.

Accepting your payout closes this window. Choose anything you want back before you accept.

Getting paid

We pay by PayPal, Venmo or Cash App, whichever you pick. Nothing is sent until you have seen the full breakdown and accepted it. We never deduct the cost of shipping your cards to us.

Accepting is final on valuation. Once you accept, we pay you and your cards go on to be sold, which we cannot undo. If you think we have made a genuine mistake (arithmetic, or a card we identified as the wrong thing), tell us within 30 days and we will look at it and correct it if we got it wrong. That is about errors, not second thoughts about a price you already agreed.

If you go quiet, we will chase you. If 90 days pass after your breakdown is posted with no acceptance and no reply, we may complete the sale and send your payout to the method already on your profile. We would much rather you just accepted it.

Counterfeit and prohibited cards

Fakes turn up in bulk, usually without the seller having any idea. If we find counterfeit cards in your lot we will photograph them, show them on your lot page so you can see exactly what was pulled and why, and then destroy them. They are not paid for and they are not sent back.

We know that is the strictest of the available options. Returning counterfeits would put them back into circulation and make us part of the problem, so we would rather absorb the awkwardness than do that.

What we are responsible for

We will take reasonable care of your cards while they are with us. If we lose or damage them through our own fault, we will pay you what they were worth under the pricing above.

Beyond that, our total responsibility to you for anything connected with a lot is limited to the value of that lot. We are not responsible for indirect losses: a deal you missed, a card that moved in price while it was with us, or profit you expected to make elsewhere.

Nothing here limits anything that cannot legally be limited.

Your account

Keep your login details to yourself; anything done through your account is treated as done by you. Tell us straight away if you think someone else has access.

We may suspend or close an account that is being used fraudulently, to send us stolen or counterfeit goods, or to abuse the service. If you have a lot with us when that happens, we will still deal with it fairly under these terms.

Getting in touch

If something goes wrong, talk to us first. Most things are a misunderstanding, and we would rather fix it than argue about it. Write to support@viridian.cards.

For anything about your personal information specifically (seeing it, correcting it, deleting it), write to privacy@viridian.cards instead, and see our privacy policy.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The version that applies to your lot is the one in force when you submitted it, so a change can never alter the deal on a lot already in progress.

If we change anything materially we will email you about it.
